Half the field was eliminated today as 8 of the 16 contestants
in DEWALT’s national Million Dollar Challenge cordless
screwdriver contest advanced to compete in the second
round. The contest is presented by Chevy Trucks.
The challenge is to see who can drive five screws the fastest
with a DEWALT 14.4-volt cordless screwdriver drill. The fastest
time in Friday’s first round was 7.46 seconds by John
Smith of Delaware, OH. Contestants are seeded against each
other tournament-style and will be eliminated until the two
fastest men clash head-to-head Sunday, November 10 before
the start of the Winston Cup NASCAR race in Phoenix, Arizona.
The winner gets $10,000 and a chance to capture the grand
prize worth $1 million if he can drive 5 screws in less than
7 seconds during his final round.
Sunday’s event begins with a parade lap that includes
16 Chevy Express vans circling the track at the Phoenix International
Raceway to show off the contestants’ names and hometowns.
Each of the 16 finalists won a new segment-busting 2003 Chevy
Express contractor’s van with industry exclusives such
as all wheel drive, left hand door and unique access panels
filled with $2,000 worth of DEWALT tools and accessories.
The championship round and million-dollar attempt will then
take place at the Start/Finish line in front of 100,000 spectators.

Qualifying for the DEWALT Million Dollar Challenge took place
from April through August when more than 50,000 people entered
local contests in 100 cities nationwide. The fastest 460 local
qualifiers were then narrowed to 16 finalists who earned a
trip to Phoenix.
The DEWALT Million Dollar Challenge is presented by DEWALT
Power Tools and Accessories, Chevy Trucks, Bombardier ATVs,
Adrian Steel, and the Greater Phoenix Convention and Visitors
Bureau.
